Research and Prevention
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke conducts and supports research on injuries to the nervous system such as brachial plexus injuries. Much of this research is aimed at finding ways to prevent and treat these disorders.
The United Brachial Plexus Network (UBPN) is a registered non-profit organization devoted to providing information, support and leadership for families and those concerned with brachial plexus injuries worldwide.
Brachial plexus injury can often be avoided by delivering a child via C-section. This alleviates the need to use excessive force to remove a large child from the birth canal.
However, not all brachial plexus injury occurs when a woman attempts to vaginally delivery a large baby. Even normal or premature babies can be injured when proper care is not used to deliver the child.
